When a group of us was treasure hunting at my boyfriend's mom's friend's basement, this chair didn't actually stand out that much.

The reason I accepted it was because I've never tried and refinished a project like this before, so I kind of wanted to give this a chance.

Upon receiving this wicker chair, I was amazed by how thick and strong rattan, the main material used to make this chair, was.

They really don't make stuff like this anymore!

Even with several years or even a decade of usage, there were no signs of severe deterioration, just some paint chips and small wear and tears here and there, nothing a little paint can cover and save.

From my first glance, I knew I had to prepare myself for a painting war with the wicker chair because there were millions of knots and tight corners that were difficult and some impossible to reach with paint brush.

Every single time I by-passed this chair, I thought to myself that I was definitely in over my head and I took way more than I could chew.

With such pessimistic attitude, I stumbled across Rust-Oleum Chalked spray paint in a range of pastel color at Home Depot.

Thank Goodness!

I chose chiffon cream to give this dark and dingy chair a more refreshing and clean make over.

However, how to update chair cushions was another long and dragging story.

I knew that chalk paint can paint over fabric ever since I started my own experiments with different brands of chalk paint.

So, I began my extensive research on Pinterest on how to paint fabric with chalk paint.

With a little knowledge in head and zero experiences in pocket, rather than continuing YouTubing for more "how to" clips, I chose a more hands-on way to test the theory out.

So here it went....

First of all, the most important thing was to adjust your water and chalk paint ratio to 1:1.

Secondly, a painted side should be rested and air-dried for 24 hours before second coat, and between coats, you should use sand paper to smooth out the roughness of the painted fabric.

Third, it will take, for sure, more than 1 to 2 coats before every inch on the cushions was covered evenly and shown an even tone base.

As for myself, it took 3 coats to finally get the light airy blue over the original wine burgundy color.

After sanding to smooth out the finish, I decided to let the dark red peeking through, after all, distressed shabby chic style was what I meant to achieve.

Finally, remember to apply a layer of wax, either natural or synthetic, to protect and seal the paint onto the chair cushions.

This one-of-the-kind wicker chair with its unique wingback design was spray painted with several coats of Rust Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint spray paint version in chiffon cream color to overall freshen up the original dark brown color, brighten up the entire chair, and in the meantime, given it a vintage feel.

The wicker chair part was then lightly sanded to smooth the surface and in some areas, carefully distressed to reveal a bit of the warm wood tone underneath.

To protect the furniture paint, a coat of Rust Oleum Chalked Protective Topcoat in matte clear was sprayed evenly on at the end to preserve the chalky finish to go with the shabby chic style.

Both the back and the bottom chair cushions were hand-painted with Rust Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in serenity blue color to build a calming and soothing palette.

They were sanded to get rid of the roughness of the dry paint and to let the original subtle burgundy red to peek through creating a layered paint look and an interesting contrast between the original red and the painted on blue colors.

To completely seal the paint into both cushions, a layer of Van Gogh Fossil Paint Clear Natural Beeswax was applied.

This wingback style wicker chair can be used indoor for all seasons and moved to the outdoor porch or balcony for summer season.
